A glimpse into the shadows: An insider’s adventures in the world of escorts, Episode 27

Sophie walks through the apartment door, giant bottle of tequila in one hand and a large cloth bag in the other. All of a sudden it hits me. There was something I was supposed to do today. “Fuck, I forgot to pick up the margarita mix.”
“Well, at least I remembered the tequila.” Sophie closes the front door with her foot and puts the bottle of tequila on the counter before cracking it open and taking a swig right from the bottle.

“Your day was that bad, huh?” I ask, leaning back against the counter.
“Oh Sarah you have no idea. I got out of class and had to run to an appointment. I switched into my Carmen clothes in a McDonald’s bathroom across from the university, right? Well wouldn’t you know it but there is a group of people from school sitting there when I come out and they see me come out of the bathrooms wearing this short skirt and hooker boots. Not my typical outfit but it was a customer request. Thankfully I had my jacket on so they couldn’t see just how much cleavage I was showing. I mean, these people see me every day wearing t-shirts and jeans, and here I am immediately after class changing into stripper clothes.”
“That’s not so bad, but maybe use a different McDonald’s next time.” I open the fridge to find something that will go with tequila. I settle on fruit punch and pour myself a big glass before pouring Sophie and I two shots glasses full to the brim. “Oh shit, do you want a glass of mix? I should have asked.”
“No, I’m fine.” She says, lifting the shot glass to her lips. I grab mine just in time to swig it at the same time as her. “It was humiliating. I wonder what they think. Maybe they just think that I’m a stripper.”
“You think being a stripper isn’t as bad as being an escort?” I say, my mouth on fire from the shot. I really wish I had remembered to get the margarita mix.
“Not even close. At least in my opinion. Anyways, so that fucking sucked. But then I get to my appointment and he’s not there. It was one of my regulars and he was super fucking late and didn’t bother to call or text. So here I am freezing my ass off in this mini skirt waiting for him to answer me and tell me what the fuck is going on. I finally had to go in to a Starbucks across the way and warm up. Twenty five minutes later he calls me apologizing, said he got stuck in a meeting at work and he’s on his way. I told him I was leaving and he begged me to stay and said he’d pay me for a full two hours. I walked back to the hotel and met him but I was in such a pissy mood the whole time. He apologized and I know he was sincere but I was just so angry, you know? It was hard to get through the appointment and I left after about an hour. I honestly wonder if I’ll ever hear from him again. It didn’t go well.”
“Aw hun, I’m sorry. That does suck. You can’t help if that put you in a bad mood though, that would put me into a really foul mood.” Sensing that we’re going to need some food in our stomachs if we want to not die from alcohol poisoning I grab an extra large frozen pizza from the freezer and put it in the oven.
“You’re not even going to preheat that?” She asks.
“Whoa, whoa, if you want to cook, please go right ahead. I won’t stop you.”
“Sorry, I’m so edgy today. I feel like my skin is crawling.” She says.
“The tequila didn’t help?”
“It didn’t hurt.” She says, smirking.
“Yet.” I say. Sophie grabs the tequila bottle and heads to the couch. I grab the jug of fruit punch and follow her.
“The whole thing with Jeff yesterday put me in a terrible mood.”
“I figured that might be it.”
“I feel like maybe I’m the monster, maybe I’m the one that’s really fucked up.”
“You have to give that kind of talk a rest, Soph. You have every right to be upset about what happened but it was really the best possible outcome. Yeah, it sucks that he’s so fucking clueless that he couldn’t see that he was outright stalking you but it’s good that he is going to give it a rest. It’s good that we met with him and he now understands that he’s gotta fuck right off. I can understand how sad it must make to know that you’ve hurt him, but it’s not your fault. You need to put this behind you.”
“I will, it’s just easier said than done. I keep thinking about it. I keep picturing his sad little face.” Sophie takes another swig from the bottle of tequila but this time she grabs the jug from me and chases the shot with some fruit punch. “God, why do we drink this stuff? It’s fucking poison.”
“Gets the job done.” I reply. Sophie passes me the bottle of tequila and I almost take a swig before my stomach churns and I decide to get up and grab a glass instead. “Do you want a glass? We can make fruit punch tequila cocktails.”
“Yeah, bring me a glass. I don’t think I can take another shot.” I grab us both glasses and flop down on the couch next to Sophie. “Thanks.” She grabs the glass from me and pours herself a few shots before filling the glass up with fruit punch. She takes a sip and grimaces. “This cocktail might take some getting used to.”
“Again, it gets the job done. Sorry I forgot the margarita mix, I will truly never live it down. Anyways, let’s drink away your problems tonight and then forget about them, okay? You need to put Jeff in the past. I really think he’s going to leave you alone this time. In fact, I would bet money on it.”
“I think he will too but I still feel like rotten garbage. I know he was crazy but he was also really sweet.”
“Yes, but let’s not gloss over just how crazy he was…” I say, hoping she’s not really going to beat herself up about this for much longer.
“I’m not trying to. I just think he’s confused.”
“Sophie, why are you sympathizing with him? I mean, I understand that you’re a woman and we are hardwired to feel empathy especially for lost causes but you are smarter than this.” For a second Sophie looks offended and I worry that the tequila has gone to my head and I’ve said too much.
“You’re right. Let’s just drop it. I’m fine. How was your day?”
“Good. Booked some appointments for you for next week, we’re almost completely filled up for Monday to Friday. I vacuumed Carmen’s room and restocked the fridge. There are clean linens on the bed. I cleaned and put away a whole pile of sheets so you have lots of spares.”
“Thank you, love. Did Mike come over?” She asks, taking a small sip of her drink.
“No, he was working all day.”
“He’s not coming over tonight?”
“No, why?”
“Oh, nothing, just curious.” She pauses. “I was just wondering if you were ever going to tell me your decision about the threesome.”
“Oh…” Thanks to the tequila she’s managed to catch me completely off guard. I’ve put off answering her for so long that I had hoped perhaps she had forgot about it or realized that I wasn’t interested.
“I mean, I’ve already figured out that you don’t want to do it. How long were you going to keep me hanging?”
“I didn’t mean to… I’m sorry…” I say, hating myself for sounding so flustered.
“It’s cool. I just have to tell him either way, he asks about it every single time I see him.”
“I put a lot of thought into it… It’s an unbelievable amount of money and if circumstances were different, my answer would probably be different but…” I say.
“Because of Mike. I get it. No worries.” Sophie grabs my knee and squeezes. “I don’t want to make you feel weird about it, I just had to know.”
“I’m sorry, Soph. I should have told you by now. I guess I thought I might change my mind?” I say, shrugging my shoulders.
“You were waiting for Mike to fuck up.”
“Not quite… Just thought I might have a moment of clarity where I realized that money was more important than honesty but that never happened.”
“You also didn’t want to offend me by telling me no.” She says, hitting the nail right on the head.
“I don’t want you to think it’s because I’m too good to be a prostitute or something.”
Sophie laughs. “Hun, don’t worry about that. I know you don’t think that. It would have been fun but I don’t want you putting your relationship with Mike at risk. I really do like him, he’s a cool guy.” She smiles sweetly at me and I know she’s telling the truth. It makes me feel good that she likes him, she can be quite critical of my boyfriends.
I collapse onto her in a big bear hug. “I love you, Soph.”
She hugs me back, laughing. “I think you’re burning the pizza.”
